Troutman

The Iredell County town of Troutman is another growing community along Interstate 77 and US 21 between Charlotte and Statesville.  What began as a 200 acre purchase nearby, evolved to a wagon shop at a fork in the road, to a rail stop, and eventually a town.

Troutman is named after the Troutman family who purchased the first 200 acres in 1778 and ran the wagon shop.  Jacob Troutman was an early settler who purchased the land; while his daughter-in-law Anne and her children who built the wagon shop that made the Troutman name well known in the area.  The town was incorporated in 1905.  Interestingly, the town was more commonly known as Troutman's or Troutmans until 1956.  The 1946-47 North Carolina Highway map at let shows the Troutmans spelling.

Downtown Troutman is located at the same spot where Anne Troutman and her children built their wagon shop.  An ice cream and deli, barbecue restaurant and other businesses are located in downtown.  A rail trail that begins downtown runs parallel to US 21 and NC 115.

Just north of downtown is the Iredell County Fairgrounds.  The fairgrounds hosts numerous events - the largest is the Iredell County Agricultural Fair which is held over Labor Day weekend and the first full week of September.  Troutman is also the nearest town from Lake Norman State Park and downtown is a popular spot for a post-hike treat or meal!
