Matthews Crossroads & Pig Basket Creek

Matthews Crossroads is located on NC 58 just south of Castalia.  This Nash County crossroads is located near the headwaters of Pig Basket Creek.  However, the story of Pig Basket Creek is more interesting.   The story goes that Pig Basket Creek gets its name from an early settler who was coming home with a basket of newborn pigs dropped the basket in the creek while trying to cross it.  The creek was swollen after a recent storm.
